Thinking of buying another plane in the next year or so...

I really want to build an experimental but have heard from multiple credible sources that it's not worth spending the money on building when you can buy a nice capable production airplane for cheap now. So, I'm looking at 172, 172RG, 177, 177RG, PA28R. My budget will be from $40 - $60k. Any one have comments on these models or something equivalent, i.e. maintenance issues with certain year models, comfort, ownership costs? Any comments appreciated!

Definately would stay away from a home build - I don't feel qualified to build an airplane so I leave it to the pros. I can help you out as far as costs though. Of course there is a trade off when considering new vs. old on up front cost vs. maint cost.

I will list the cost items:

Tie Down or Hangar - Tie Down $900/yr Hangar $3,840 - $5,280/yr
Insurance - $1,500 - $2,000/yr
Annual Inspection $1,200/yr

Total annual cost $3,600 - $8,480

Hourly operating costs

Fuel 8 GPH @ $6.00 - $48.00/hr
Engine reserve - @10/hr
Maintenance per hour - $10/hr
Oil change - @2.00/hr
Avionics - $2.00/hr
Airframe Depreciation - $2.50/hr

Total hourly costs - $74.50

Annual costs at $7,000 flown 100 hours/yr = $70/hr

Total cost at 100 hours/yr = $144.50/hr

Another consideration is the initial investment. Also if this aircraft will be IFR certified there are additional costs associated with that - GPS data updates and pitot-static certs.
